TTK Hospital, Chennai
The TTK Hospital, Chennai, offers
detoxification and therapy to people dependent on drugs or alcohol.
The month-long residential programme includes identification of
addicts, counselling, detoxification and after-care.
Treatment begins with an initial
assessment of the patient to confirm the level of addiction. The
patient is made aware of his problem and admitted to the primary
residential treatment programme, which is followed by medical
management or detoxification of the patient. Once the patient
is physically stable, the patient undergoes psychological therapy
comprising community meetings, counselling, group therapy, art
therapy and self-help programmes.
The After Care Centre (ACC), an
integral part of the main hospital, was established in collaboration
with the WHO, United Nations Drug Control Programme, International
Labour Organisation, the Colombo Plan and with partial financial
assistance from the European Commission. This was in direct reponse
to the realisation that a majority of drug users are young, lack
family support and vocational skills. They require extended care
and support.
Chronic addicts can stay for upto
three months at the ACC. This gives them adequate time to recover
from the illness of addiction and return to healthy routines and
a positive lifestyle.
The After Care Centre offers treatment
aimed at total abstinence and an improved quality of life. Having
treated over 1000 patients during the past 14 years, the institute
strongly believes that addicts can lead meaningful lives free
of drugs and alcohol. All it takes is timely treatment and support.
