Transplant support
Bangalore Medical Services Trust
& Research Institute maintains two full-fledged laboratories
to support transplant activities through testing, cross matching
and tissue typing.
Established in 1997, the PT Kasturi
Memorial Histo-Compatibility Laboratory carries out tissue typing
and matching tests, which are prerequisites for organ transplantation.
Serological and PCR (NAT) techniques are used to perform HLA typing.
On an average the laboratory performs 25 to 35 tissue typings per month
and 15 to 20 cross matches for patients from Renal Transplant Centres
in Bangalore and Mysore.
Built in 2002, the NAT (Nucleic Acid
Testing) Laboratory performs HLA typing by DNA (PCR) methods; Nucleic
Acid testing, and diagnosis of Transfusion Transmissible Infection
agents. We are also the 2nd laboratory in India to launch NAT technique
for testing for viral RNA for HIV, Hepatitis C, etc., using NAT methods.
The organisation aids bone
marrow transplants with PBSC harvesting, cryoprecipitation and
storage. It also provides platelets and other blood products to
support patients who have undergone a bone marrow or stem cell
transplant.
